James later received his degree from Mannes College of Music under the tutelage of Frederick Hand. At Mannes, he formed the soprano and classical guitar duo of Bartos and Baird. The duo performed in New York City and throughout Latin America. Mr. Baird went on to found the widely acclaimed flute and guitar duo of Windwood.
